Three iconic dresses

Audrey Hepburn's LBD in Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) - Chic and timeless

Like in many of her other films, the garments Audrey worn in BaT were designed by the great couturier Hubert de Givenchy, who also became a life long friend of hers. On Givenchy, Audrey once said: "It was as though as I was born to wear his clothes". With his collaboration and her own personal style and attitude, Audrey brought her true essence to many of her screen characters, though none of them was as iconic as Holly Golithtly in her long gloves, flipped-out hair and large sunglasses. For 1950s inspiration, watch Funny Face, which costumes were also designed by Givenchy. And see Breakfast at Tiffany's trailer here.

Marilyn Monroe's halter-neck dress in The Seven Year Itch (1955) - Subtitle sensuality

"Feminity is the strongest weapon a woman can have", said William Travilla, the costume designer responsible for one of the most flattering dresses Marilyn Monroe worn in a film, as well as the one she's mostly remembered for. Inspired in the classical grecian robes, the dress was not outrageously provocative, fair enough to pass through the censorship at those times, though in the original version of the film, MM's legs were slightly bared in the film's most famous scene (watch the deleted scene here). Travilla was known for his ability of flattering figures, as he did for Marilyn in 11 of her films, enhancing her natural curves.

Rita Hayworth's satin gown in Gilda (1946) - Be a femme fatale

If Audrey had Givenchy and Marilyn had Billy Travilla, Rita Hayworth had the parisian designer Jean Louis, something perfectly natural in Hollywood until early 1960s, as the studio system ruled the cinema industry, and just like a film star would be under contract to a particular studio, a costume designer would also be. In the 1940s, Rita was Columbia pictures' biggest moneymaker and Louis was a very important ingredient to the formula that created her femme fatale image. "There never was a woman like Gilda!", was the movie's tagline in the role that immortalized Hayworth as one of the Hollywood's original goddesses of glamour. The long wavy hair along with the famous long glove stripping scene made her figure iconic and the mentioned scene an unforgettable movie moment. Who cares if she was lip-synching? Watch it here.

This is a beautifully reasearched article, Romeika. I learn something interesting every day from your blog. For instance, I had no idea designers were under contract to the film studios years ago.
