Simplicity might be the key

There's something in Birth that pleases me somehow, despite its excessively symbolic scenes, the holes between lines that could have been better explained, the attitudes of the little boy that claims to an adult woman, that he's the reincarnation of her dead husband, and the woman herself, who believes him, and we don't quite know why. I like it, and it's not only because of Nicole's underrated performance, but mainly due to the understated visual of this film, from its costumes to its art direction. There's almost no hint of colour, everything is pretty much simple and subtitle as a winterly colour palette. Nicole's character, Anna, keeps it simple even while accessorizing (minimal jewelry and make-up) and her Jean Seberg-esque haircut was the ideal choice.

Birth (2004)
Directed by Jonathan Glazer.
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Cameron Bright, Danny Huston, Lauren Bacall, Anne Heche.

Mesmo não gostanto tanto de "Reencarnação", não concordei com muitas das críticas que foram feitas ao filme na época de seu lançamento. Além da trilha maravilhosa, outro destaque é sua fotografia, algo que pode ser observado por esse post.

The film could have grand flaws, but I was one of the only people who aproved it at the time. It's a kind of beautiful film in it's implication and the scene of the cinema, focused on Nicole for several minutes, is sublime! The photography is also great, as is the compositions.

Ciao!

Are you talking about Nicole Kidman? If so jeez she looks nothing like she does now!

Vinicius, partilho de uma opiniao semelhante, afinal, nao amo o filme, mas acho injustas as severas criticas da epoca do lancamento. A fotografia eh realmente belissima.

Wally, I think she was watching a play, perhaps? Anyway, that scene is my favourite, love her expression.

Ryanne, I'm talking about Nicole's character in "Birth", as well as the visual of the film itself.

Olimpia, love the haircut as well. The film is not great, but I find it worth watching it due to the aspects I named in the text.

Concordo que, em "Reencarnação", a Nicole oferece uma boa performance, mas eu não gosto nada desse filme. Acho um ponto baixo na carreira de todos os envolvidos.

I haven't seen this movie, but the pictures you chose make me want to see it. I have to admit that I didn't like Nicole Kidman for a long time, but I think since her separation from Cruise, she has been getting better and better not only as an actress but also as a woman and she has made some brilliant choices concerning her roles... so why not try this movie?

I love her haircut in this movie. Also thought she was very good in "Birthday Girl" from 2002. have you seen it?

Kamila, ja sabia que vc nao gostava nada do filme hehe

Grinda, I agree, Nicole improved her career in so many levels after the divorce. However, I like some of her pre-divorce performances, like in "To Die For" and "The Portrait of a Lady".

Nursemyra, yeah, I have seen it, she's good in it as well. I love the 2001/2002 phase of Nicole.
