A few comments on the last films I've seen in the movies

Knocked Up is a comedy written and directed by the same guy who accomplished The 40 Year Old Virgin (which i haven't seen), an unpretentious film perfect for a saturday evening when all you expect is to have some good laugh and a good time. I don't see anything greater than that in this film, so, in my humble point of view, Knocked Up has been extremely overrated. Some people even claimed the film is much more realistic than most of dumb comedies out there (not so hard to be, isn't it?), but i don't see much reality in it, on the contrary. I'm a person who truly believes in love, real love, but for me, nothing seems more awkward or out of reality than a beautiful, sweet, intelligent and successful young woman saying "I Love You!" to a 20-year-old chubby and awfully dressed young man whose major activities consist in smoking cannabis all day and marking down when celebrities appear naked in movies in order to build a website related uniquely to this theme: famous boobs and bush. Alison (Katherine Heigl) has been promoted to the job of a TV presenter on E! Channel, and in order to celebrate it, she goes party and meet Ben (Seth Rogen). She gets drunk, they dance, they go to her place, they have the cliche one night stand and a couple of weeks later - surprise! - She's pregnant.

A Mighty Heart is one of the films i was really expecting to see, since it seemed like a powerful drama and some critics even claimed Jolie was Oscar-worth it. I've always admired her as an actress, but after some wrong choices and a few bad actings (like Alexander, what was that?!?), i started to lose my faith on her. But Jolie proves once again how capable she is of giving a good performance. She plays Mariane Pearl, the very pregnant wife of Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and murdered during a terrorist act in Karachi, Pakistan, in january 2002 (yes, the movie is based on true facts). By logic, Mariane is one of the most - or if not - the most truly real character Angelina has ever portrayed. Her performance feels convincing and substantial, though she didn't seem to have worked on the character's accent (not that this last thing mattered to me). Surrounded by a post-09/11 atmosphere, the story is heartbreaking, as we follow Mariane's anxiety and endless hope on finding and rescuing her beloved husband. It's really moving the moment when she finally finds out what happened to Danny, as well as the reaction of those who were working on rescuing him while watching the video that left no doubt about the journalist's fate. A very subtitle moment where the camera chooses to show the reaction on those men's faces instead of exposing the cruel reality.

Kamila, Knocked Up é bom, eu gostei do filme pq fui esperando dar boas risadas e isso o filme cumpre bem.

*FIM DO SPOILER*
Abs!

Completely agree!!! I just cldn't buy into Heigl's character falling for that man. No way. Never! xx

Romeika said...

libertygirl: Exactly! The guy is not an ass, he's actually sweet, but no way. I doubt something like that happens in real life.

Agreed that Jolie (and everyone elses) was terrible in 'Alexander.' That movie was just a mess.

I wasn't planning on seeing 'A Mighty Heart' but your description certainly makes it sound compelling.

Romeika said...

Ambika, Alexander was such a big mess, indeed. A stain in Oliver Stone's career. As for A Mighty Heart, i think that real story is definetely worth it of being told to the world.

I liked Knocked Up. I guess I liked it better than you did. Saying that, I've already forgotten almost everything about it. It was funny, but not particularly memorable.
I saw the previews for A Mighty Heart, but didn't want to see it because it felt too "real" since it is based on an actual tragic event.

Romeika.

Romeika said...

Seraphine, i actually liked the film, it was funny, but nothing beyond that (as you pointed, you even forgot about it). As for A Might Heart..yeah, it's a realistic film when it comes to the anguish and suffering Mariane Pearl had to deal with, but there's no cheap violance in it.

Romeika said...

Vinícius, eu daria três estrelinhas pelas risadas:-p Abs!

i really want to see a mighty heart
i saw knocked up and i really loved it
i dont think it was the most realistic film but it made me laugh a lot and it was quite a sweet story
plus i love babies

Kamila said...

Romeika said...

Coco (and everyone else who loved this film cause it made you laugh), yeah, i laughed too!, but i don't know why is that, i just can't praise a film just cause it made me laugh. The movie has to come up with more. I mean, i can laugh by watching a sitcom. Oh well, the remarkable thing is i can love a film forever just cause it made me weep, but i guess that's because this kind of film usually has a lot more to offer. (I hope i don't sound like a grumpy=)

(estou errada?)

i want to see knocked up because it looks funny and i love greys anatomy and katherien heigl is great there :)

Your blog is very nice:)

Kamila said...

Lauren said...

i havent seen either and i need to!

Romeika said...

Mustafa, Thanks! ^^

Kamila said...

a mighty heart is so fab!!! i cried and wow. it's beeyootiful.
anyhow; so are the pretty orange colored flowers u haf in the prev post!

anyhow thanks for d comment!
haha! get the chanel inspired bags alright?!! lol!!
yer and lip balms are total life savers!!

love!

Romeika said...

Penelope, the film is really emotional in some moments, i didn't cry, but i just could imagine what enormous and indescribable pain she must have felt by losing her husband, the father of her future child:-( Those flashbacks in the film are beautiful. -x-

Kamila said...

really want to see both of these films, the trailers for a mighty heart look very gripping.

I think I may have missed the boat a bit for knocked up, so will probably see Superbad instead.

S xx

Romeika said...

Discothequechic, you cannot only take the eyes from that trailer, as well from the movie. As for "Superbad", i've had enough of it by watching its trailer. I'll use my commonsense and save some money this time=)

Neither of these films has come out in Finland yet but i'm very willing to see A Mighty Heart as i've heard so much about it and the subject is quite interesting. I'm not so sure about the first one but yeah, it could be a good movie to turn your brain off and in a boring Saturday evening :P

You are a great journalist by the way! Keep on writing! I really like to read your fresh ideas.

Kat said...

Knocked up is a brilliant comedy but nothing more then a brilliant comedy, so i see where you are coming from. It's unrealistic and comedies are supposed to be just that, so I don't get this talk of it being 'so realistic'.
A mighty heart sounds very good. I'm not an Angelina fan in any way but i would really like to see this movie.

Hugs. It's a weekend, and rainy outside today, which is good because it has been a dry summer. I need to go work out, but of course I couldn't let the day go by without first stopping to say Hi to you.

I love your cinema posts! i really do!

I want to see both movies indeed. The first one, although it doesn't seem to be that realistic and the second, because Angie's on it =)

Sofy, thanks a lot, i'm glad you appreciate my posts, as i don't really think of myself as a journalist anymore, but as someone who studied Journalism in college and that's it. "Knocked Up" is the perfect movie to turn your brain off, nothing beyond that.

Kat, i only pointed this "being so realistic talk" because some critics used this statement to justify the greatness of the film, while everyone (including me) knows and expects everything but reality from such a comedy. But allow me to disagree with you, i think some comedies can be as realistic as any other film genre.

Cotton Candy, yeah, it's a funny film, a good one, but not great, in my humble opnion. ^^

Jennifer, i'll see "Superbad" sometime when they show it on TV:-)

Seraphine, how sweet. Hope you had a nice weekend!

Aisha, thanks!

Kira, obrigada! ^^
