Jim Dine's Words for Paul's Daughters and a Little Wrench (1971). Pop art. Read more about him here.

I don't have the information about the girl and the monkeys in the second painting but the first one is another pop art piece. That's Roy Lichtenstein's Figures in Landscape (1977).
...
Above: Eric Fischl's Birth of Love (1987). Part of the permanent collection at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, that is temporarily exhibiting over 250 Richard Avedon's photographs. See more from Fischl here. And down: more from the National Art Museum.

What about you? Besides what you might have read or studied about contemporary art, do you genuinely understand what such pieces and so many others mean? Or maybe it doesn't matter at all?

I've decided art doesn't need to have meaning. It either has meaning for someone, or it does't.
In the first piece you show, Romeika, I find myself mouthing the words in the squares. Do you see how the word egg forms in my the back of my throat?
Someone else would have noticed the word egg is in an orange square. Would the art mean the same thing to her?
Meaning is subjective anyway.
The most interesting art makes you look at it. It demands your attention.
The meaning of girl in bed with monkeys is obvious. Isn't it?
Seraphine, i really agree with you. I was going to write a text about it: perhaps, the main thing about art is the fact it's possible to make numerous interpretations out of one single thing. But i prefered to make it in blank and wait to hear anyone's opinions. If you feel a certain way about a painting and then someone else feels totally different, it doesn't mean that what you think is untrue. But it ends up being so vague for me. I just feel the need for a meaning. Most of the times i see a film or read a book i can truly understand and criticize the material, but with modern art.. And no, i don't see an obvious meaning in the girl with the monkeys:-S I just have an awful perception for this sort of art. Even ancient forms of art. For me it was always about feeling pleased by its beauty, or shocked by its ugliness or just anything at all, with a very few exceptions (i might post something on it tomorrow).
i love going to art museums because i always find myself becoming mesmerised by the feeling/atmosphere that a piece of art can give off. im not very good at interpreting art though but then i always think that you can never be wrong in interpreting a piece of art - it's your own perspective and noone can judge your pov. it's upto you. ^^
but anyway, i want to go to an art museum too...what am i talking about, i have to - for my uni assignment. oh dear. i don't like analysing artworks...
some of these are really good!
Hey Cotton, i think that's the most common to anyone in an art museum, you have a feeling about a piece, despite of not "understanding" it properly. It's something emotional and not rational. But when it comes to a college essay..oh well, then it becomes rational. It must be hard to analyse a piece with academic purposes. Tell me how it ended up:-) -x-
that's beautiful art, I would love to have it hanging in my house!
Sera's interpretation of Monkey's in Bed...
The girl has white skin, so she is a virgin. She is wearing a red gown (and no longer children's pajamas) so she is maturing.
The plants growing from the bed represent her fertility and organic nature.
The monkeys represent the "untamed" or animal nature of her yearning- and also the fear (monkey teeth) and lack of carnal understanding/knowledge (monkeys that look like children).
The spider is beginning to spin a web that the girl instinctively knows will eventually ensnare her.
Finally, the vine, representing perhaps the penis, dangles within reach. The girl, with perfect innocence, does not know what to do with it. Her hands inch closer to the vine.
We know soon she will grasp the vine and climb into the tree, leaving her childhood behind forever.
i couldnt tell you what its supposed to mean, but i love the roy lichenstein one!
Ohmygod I haven't commented here like in years =)
I like pop art but i wish i was more educated about art to talk about it.
most of this i like but the third one i really dont like
great post
it was really different
Seraphine, WOW:-O i'm really impressed by your sensibility! And now that you explain it to me, it makes perfect sense when i look at the painting. I'd love to hear what more you'd have to say on other pieces of art...
Coco, thanks!
...
Everyone else, thanks for the comments.
Yeah I don't think art always has to mean something, I think we can all look a bit too far into it. I don't really like attention seeking art that is just trying to be controversial like Damien Hirst stuff, at the same time I respect what he's doing.
I just love art really and i like how we can interpret it as we choose and the emotions that it can evoke in us without us even thinking about the piece.
Great Post x x x
Ps Seraphine's analysing is amazing!
i adore pop art and roy linchestein, plus the others that you posted looked great too :)
i love the second one and the last one.
pop art is my passion.

Kat, i don't know who Damien Hirst is, but i just googled him and from what i could see, it's not my thing either. I've seen similar sculptures on the last time i was in an art museum, a big fat pig with human features and a huge penis... aborted babies..etc.
I love when art surprises. Good art should always present something familiar and something resembleing a forgotten memory.
By the way Romeika, tomorrow's Encore Seraphine comic is linked to this discussion. I hope you don't mind. Hugs.
Seraphine, of course i don't mind it at all. Can't wait to read the next comic:-) -x-
nothing matters...it's the school of post modern thought. i think pop art is a direct response to the retaliation against modernism and it's a product of questioning art and expression itself. now we're moving toward a conglomerate of modernity and post modernity...some kind of existentialism. art is always about someone finding a way. and everyone's way is different. . . well, most people's are.
I love contemporary art. Some of the pieces I don't really understand but I love to see the way these artists use their imagination, their innovative thinking, the brightness of their work, the colors, the wording.
Excellent post. Good choice of artists.
Dulcinea, that's also a good point (this thing of finding a way), though i didn't know about this thing that art tends to be existential these days.
Dani, thanks! Though i don't always understand, i can still admire its beauty, for example..
